Early Sunday morning is the time of the week when women in their 20s and 30s are most vulnerable to sexual assault, police said.

North Jeolla Provincial Police Agency’s record of the past three years showed that 16.1 percent of sex crimes occurred on Sundays, and 39.4 percent of those incidents happened between midnight and 4 a.m. Women in their 20s and 30s were the most targeted groups, accounting for roughly one-third of all assaulted women.

“It is important that one confirms the identity of the gas-meter man or a delivery man before opening the doors, especially when one lives in a closed area including one-room apartments,” said an official from the police.

The total number of sexual assaults surged to some 22,000 in 2012, up 62 percent from 2007.

성범죄가 일요일 새벽 시간대 20∼ 30대 여성을 상대로 가장 많이 일어난다는 조사결과가 나왔다.

전북지방경찰청은 27일 최근 3년간 전북지역에서 발생한 성범죄를 분석한 결과 일요일이 16.1%로 성범죄 발생률이 가장 높았다. 시간대는 자정부터 오전 4시 사이가 39.4%로 가장 높았고 나이 대는 20∼30대 여 성이 28.7%로 전체의 3분의 1을 차지했다.

경찰의 한 관계자는 “주택이나 원룸 등 밀폐된 공간에서는 반드시 잠금장치를 하고 가스 검침원이나 택배배달원 등은 신분을 확인한 뒤 문을 열어야 한다”면서 “심야나 새벽 시간에 외출을 자제해 달라”고 당부했다.

성폭행 건수는 2012년도 총 약 2만2천 건으로 2007년도에 비해 62퍼센트 증가했다. (코리아헤럴드)
