Baekhyun, a member of K-pop boy band EXO, is venturing into a new genre ― musicals.
He will take the lead role in “Singin’ in the Rain,” to be produced by SM Culture & Contents Co., a subsidiary of SM Entertainment.
Baekhyun will play Don Lockwood, the male protagonist, in the stage production based on the 1952 namesake musical movie directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen.
Fellow SM stars including Super Junior’s Kyuhyun and SHINee’s Onew will also be in the cast, according to SM Entertainment. Baekhyun will be the first EXO member to perform in a musical.
The musical will run from June 5-Aug. 3 at the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul.
“Singin’ in the Rain,” beloved by many around the world, depicts the love story between a high-profile movie star, Don Lockwood, and an aspiring musical singer, Kathy Selden, in the 1920s, when “talking pictures” began to replace silent movies.
The movie “Singin’ in the Rain” and a Broadway musical of the same name are most famous for the scene where Lockwood tap dances and sings in a street in the rain.
The musical premiered in Korea in 2003, starring musical actor Nam Kyung-ju.
