사모아 항공사인 사모아 에어가 세계 최초로 승객 몸무게에 따라 요금을 받아 논란이 일고 있다.3일 뉴질랜드 언론에 따르면 사모아 에어는 자사의 요금 정책이 비만의 문제점을 널리 알리고 공중 보건을 향상시키는 데도 도움을 주고 있다고 적극적으로 옹호하고 있다. 그러나 비만 전문가와 지역 사회 인사들은 다른 사람의 입장을 고려하지 않는 잘못된 정책이라고 비판하고 있다.사모아 에어는 사모아의 두 개 큰 섬인 우폴루와 사바이 사이를 운항하는 국적 항공사로 최근 미국령 사모아와 통가 노선에도 운항을 시작했다.사모아 에어를 이용하는 승객들은 몸무게에 따라 요금을 달리 내는데 노선의 길 이에 따라서도 다른 요금 기준이 적용된다.가장 짧은 노선은 승객과 짐의 무게 1㎏당 1 탈라(약 480원)를 내야 하고 장거리 노선인 미국령 사모아는 1㎏당 3.8 탈라를 내야 한다.지난해 설립된 사모아 에어는 자사의 항공 요금이 승객들로 하여금 비만의 문제를 이해하게 하는 데도 큰 도움을 주고 있다고 강조했다.
