GS Entec, a subsidiary of GS Global, will supply 37 monopiles for the 504-megawatt Taean offshore wind farm off the coast of Taean, South Chungcheong Province.
Under a contract signed Wednesday at the Seoul headquarters of Taean Wind Power, GS Entec will begin production in July 2027 and complete deliveries by the end of August 2028.
Monopiles are cylindrical steel foundations that support offshore wind turbines and towers. They can be used in waters up to about 50 meters deep and are generally more cost- and time-efficient than jacket foundations that use a lattice framework. The shallow waters and thick sedimentary layers off Taean make the area suitable for monopile foundations.
The Taean offshore wind project is being jointly developed by Singapore-based renewable energy developer Vena Energy, Danish infrastructure investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Korea Western Power. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028 and finish in 2030. Once completed, the farm is expected to power about 300,000 households for a year.
The company entered the monopile business in 2022 through a strategic technology partnership with Dutch company Sif. It supplied all 64 monopiles for the Yeonggwang Nakwol offshore wind project in 2023 and has since secured the Taean project. The company is one of the few in South Korea with experience mass-producing and delivering large monopiles from a single domestic plant.
GS Entec also completed a plant expansion after investing about 300 billion won ($220 million). The expansion increased annual production capacity from 40,000 tons to 150,000 tons, with the Taean project set to utilize the expanded capacity.
The manufacturer is also being considered as a foundation supplier for the 340-megawatt Hanbit project, following the implementation of the Offshore Wind Power Promotion and Industry Development Act in March and the government’s 55-gigawatt offshore wind auction road map through 2035. It secured a fixed-price contract in the first half of 2026, looking to expand into markets in Japan and other Asia-Pacific countries.
“By winning the Taean project following the successful Yeonggwang Nakwol project, we have demonstrated our ability to manufacture and supply large monopiles,” a GS Entec official said. “We will use our accumulated expertise and expanded production capacity to secure more orders in the domestic and overseas offshore wind foundation market.”
