Embassies of Central Asia (C5) and the Secretariat of the Central Asia-Republic of Korea Cooperation Forum (CARK) highlighted the tourism potential of Central Asia in Seoul on Wednesday.

The "C5" countries of Central Asia refer to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

The forum, launched in 2007 as a Korean initiative, serves as a dialogue platform to bolster cooperation in economic, cultural and other areas, enhance ties between Central Asian countries and Korea and promote regional cooperation.

The event was celebrated to launch Korean author Kim Ju-yeon's new book, "Central Asia, The Curtain Rises: 12 Stories Unearthed from the Steppes," which describes the region’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The book records Kim’s personal journey through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan’s history, literature, art, people and natural beauty.

"Central Asia is famous for its stunning nature, magnificent architecture, delicious food and fruits -- there is so much that is appealing," Kim said.

"But if someone asked me what the true charm of Central Asia is, I would answer without hesitation: it’s the place where the kindest people in the world live," said the author.

Delivering remarks at the Lee Jong-kook, executive director of the Secretariat of CARK, underscored Central Asia as the heart of the Great Silk Road and a land of wisdom where Eastern and Western civilizations meet.

"It (Central Asia) is the birthplace of great historical and scientific figures such as Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina and Al-Khwarizmi," said Rhee, hoping that the creation of the CARK Tourism Council, consisting of travel agencies, airlines and tourism organizations, would bring closer cooperation.

Kazakh Ambassador to Korea, Nurgali Arystanov, cited the book as a bridge for stronger humanitarian ties and regional cooperation.

"In addition to regular flights between Seoul, Astana and Almaty, direct flights by SCAT Airlines will be launched on the Shymkent-Seoul route starting May 29 this year," he announced.

He also urged tour operators to attend events such as Seoul International Travel Fair to be held from June 5 to 8 this year.

Tajik Ambassador Salohiddin Kirom pointed to the rich cultural heritage of his country, saying,

"Tajikistan, with its majestic mountains, ancient traditions and warm hospitality, is an exceptional destination," said Kirom.

Tajikistan boasts key tourist sites such as the Pamir Mountains, Iskanderkul Lake, the Marguzor Lakes, Garm-Chashma hot springs, the Buddha in Nirvana statue, the statue of Ismail Somoni and historic fortresses like Yamchun, Hissar and Hulbuk.

He also noted Tajikistan’s visa-free policy for Koreans and major investments in tourism infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Uzbek Ambassador to Korea, Alisher Abdusalomov, referred to transformative reforms in Uzbekistan and opening doors wider to the world, embracing growth and achieving remarkable success.

"Uzbekistan Airways, Asiana Airlines and Qanot Sharq currently operate 13 flights per week. Soon, South Korean airlines T'way Air and Uzbekistan’s Centrum Air will join, reaching 19 flights weekly."

"Our Special Strategic Partnership with South Korea is a testament to our mutual commitment to growth and cooperation," he added.

He invited Koreans to explore Uzbekistan’s rich heritage, highlighting its breathtaking Silk Road treasures and seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.

Attended by over 70 participants, the event showcased the diversity of Central Asia, urging to activate tourism, people-to-people exchange and deeper cultural understanding between the region and South Korea.
