[코리아헤럴드=김아린 기자] 더불어민주당이 미국 대통령 선거를 앞두고 태스크포스(TF)를 꾸려 ‘야당 외교’를 위한 선제적 전략 구상에 돌입했다. 이재명 민주당 대표는 TF에 “한반도 평화를 최우선의 가치로 두는 민주당의 일관된 외교안보 노선에 따라 대비해달라”는 취지의 당부를 한 것으로 전해졌다.

24일 코리아헤럴드 취재를 종합하면, 민주당의 싱크탱크(Think Tank)인 민주연구원은 미국 대선과 관련한 논의를 위해 전문가들과 외교통일위원회· 국방위원회· 산업통상자원중소벤처기업위원회 등 유관 상임위원회의 의원들이 참여하는 TF를 결성했다. 미국의 차기 행정부 출범 이후 상황에 선제적으로 대비하기 위함이다.

TF는 민주연구원 수석연구위원을 단장으로 한 전문 연구진과 김영배· 이재정· 위성락·김병주· 곽상언 의원 등으로 구성됐다. 이중 위성락·김병주 의원은 지난 6월 민주당 방미 외교단의 일원으로 미국을 방문해 뉴트 깅그리치 전 하원 의장 등을 면담했다.

TF는 차기 미국 행정부의 대외 정책 전망과 그에 대한 대응 전략 등 분석 내용을 미 대선 전 보고서로 발간할 계획이다. TF는 내달 4일 첫 회의를 열 예정이다.

이한주 민주연구원장은 코리아헤럴드와 통화에서 “트럼프나 해리스 중 누가 당선될지 짐작하기 어려우나, 모든 시나리오에 준비를 하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

민주당과 연구원의 미 대선 관련 활동에 대해선 “윤석열 정부의 지지율이 부진한 상황에서, 한국 국민의 진짜 뜻을 대변하는 취지”라며, “다음 미국 행정부도 민주당이 내는 메세지에 귀기울이지 않을 수 없을 것”이라고 말했다.

미 대선을 불과 한달 남짓 남긴 시점에 민주당의 이같은 행보는 본격적인 ‘야당 외교’ 채비에 나선 것으로 풀이된다. TF 소속 한 의원은 코리아헤럴드에 “미국 대선 이후 정세를 전망도 해보고, 우리가 어떻게 대응하는 게 좋을지 정책적 방향을 도출하는 협의가 이뤄질 예정”이라고 설명했다.

방미 외교단 소속 한 의원에 따르면, 민주당은 미국 대선에 맞춰 이 대표의 방미 또한 검토 중이다. 그는 “대선 이후 적절한 시점을 고를 것”이라며 “이 대표가 관심을 보이고 있다”고 전했다.

Democratic Party of Korea forms special team to brace for US presidential election

The Democratic Party of Korea launched a task force to brace for the US presidential election just over a month away, to “prepare for potential challenges after the next administration takes office,” sources told The Korea Herald on Tuesday.

The Democratic Party think tank, the Institute for Democracy, gathered a team of experts and lawmakers on the National Assembly’s relevant committees to kickstart the discussions on the party’s approach to the US presidential election.

The outcome of the task force’s work over the next few weeks will be published in a report before the election. The task force is slated to hold its first meeting on Oct. 4.

“Our dicussions will involve the our response to the situation arising after the election, and the directions that the directions that our policies should take,” one Democratic Party lawmaker participating in the task force told The Korea Herald.

The task force, led by senior researchers at the Institute for Democracy, comprises Reps. Wi Sung-lac, Lee Jae-jung, Kim Young-bae of the foreign affairs committee; Rep. Kim Byung-joo of the national defense committee; and Rep. Kwak Sang-eon of the trade and industry committee.

Two of the lawmakers on the task force, Reps. Wi Sung-lac and Kim Byung-joo, visited the US in July to meet with former President Donald Trump’s campaign officials and allies.

According to Rep. Chung Dong-young, who was part of the delegation, the Democratic Party is planning the party’s chair Rep. Lee Jae-myung’s US trip after the presidential election.

“It will be after the election, and we will be carefully considering when the right time will be,” he told The Korea Herald.
