오늘은 세련된 비즈니스 영어 표현들을 보겠습니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 오늘은 특히 프레젠테이션 자료를 만들 때 도움을 줄 수 있는 표현들을 모았습니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<경쟁력, 시장에서의 위치>

Nonetheless, we’ve laid important groundwork with our newly constructed retail stores and top-of-the-line factories. Even though we’ll be a little late to the game compared to our competitors, we now have a tremendous foundation on which to build our business.

투자자들이 매출과 이익이 적어 불안해하는 것을 알고 있습니다. 그러나 새로 매장을 열고 최고의 생산시설을 갖추는 등 중요한 기반을 다졌습니다. 경쟁사와 비교해 뒤늦게 경쟁에 뛰어들었음에도, 우리의 새 사업을 구축할 든든한 기반을 다져 놓은 것입니다.

SITUATION 기초, 기반을 마련할 때

평범하게 What kind of foundation have you created since starting the company?

영어답게 What kind of groundwork have you laid since starting the company?

‘기반을 닦는다’, ‘기반을 마련한다’라고 할 때 쓰는 가장 일반적인 표현은 lay the groundwork와 lay the foundation입니다. lay 대신 build를 활용하여 build the foundation이라고 말하기도 합니다.

The only edge we have over competition is our low prices. Customers won’t have a reason to shop with us once our competitors match our prices.

우리가 경쟁사보다 우위를 유지하고 있는 부분은 낮은 가격뿐입니다. 경쟁사가 가격을 우리 수준에 맞추면 소비자 입장에서는 우리 회사를 이용할 이유가 없죠.

SITUATION 경쟁력을 표현할 때

평범하게 We need to improve our competitiveness.

영어답게 We need to improve our competitive edge.

edge는 ‘칼날’ 외에 ‘상대보다 유리한 점’이라는 뜻도 지닙니다. ‘경쟁력’은 보통 competitiveness라고 표현하지만 competitive edge라고 하거나 간단히 edge라고만 해도 되죠.

소비자 가전 분야가 우리의 주력 사업 분야입니다만, 수익원을 다양화하기 위해 사무 장비 분야도 지속적으로 개발하고 있습니다.

SITUATION 주력 사업 분야를 표현할 때

평범하게 The clothing division is our main brand.

영어답게 The clothing division is our flagship brand.

flagship은 함대의 최전선에서 깃발(flag)을 꽂고 가는 배를 뜻하는데, 기업에서 flagship division이라고 하면 ‘돈을 많이 벌어다 주는 대표적인 사업 분야’를 일컫습니다. ‘주력사업’을 나타내기에 적합한 표현입니다.

For any new discount store, sales of clothing and apparel are often considered the low-hanging fruit.

어떤 할인 매장이든 의류가 가장 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 사업 분야입니다.

SITUATION 우선 잘할 수 있는 것에 집중할 때

평범하게 You should begin your career by taking the easiest opportunity first.

영어답게 You should begin your career by picking the low-hanging fruit first.

pick the low-hanging fruit은 낮게(low) 매달려 있는(hanging) 과일을 따듯이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 기회를 잘 이용하는 것을 말합니다. 손쉽게 이익을 창출할 수 있는 사업 기회를 설명할 때 유용한 표현이죠.

The pharmaceutical division is one of the major pillars of our business as it brings in the most revenue and has been the face of the company ever since we started selling baby powder in 1965.

1965년 베이비파우더를 판매하기 시작한 이래 제약 분야는 가장 많은 매출을 차지하면서 회사의 얼굴이 되어 온 우리 사업의 기둥입니다.

SITUATION 사업의 근간을 설명할 때

평범하게 Strong manpower is one of the main factors of our business.

영어답게 Strong manpower is one of the major pillars of our business.

pillar가 기둥이라는 뜻이므로, major pillar는 어떤 것을 떠받치고 있는 중요한 기둥을 의미합니다. 회사를 유지하는 데 근간이 되는 요소나 사업 분야를 표현하기에 적합한 말입니다.

We should focus on our strength, which is selling delicious coffee. If we start branching out into other industries, our brand image will be diluted, and we will lose focus on what made us popular.

맛 좋은 커피를 판매한다는 우리의 강점에 집중해야 합니다. 우리가 만일 다른 영역으로 진출한다면 브랜드 이미지는 희석되고 우리가 가장 잘 알려진 분야에서 주목을 받지 못하게 될 것입니다.

SITUATION 선택과 집중을 표현할 때

평범하게 We should do what we do best before branching out into new areas.

영어답게 We should focus on our strengths before branching out into new areas.

‘선택과 집중’이라는 말을 많이 쓰는데, 그 의미를 풀어서 focus on one’s strength처럼 표현할 수 있겠죠. 한편, 새로운 분야로 진출하는 것은 나무가 가지를 뻗는 모습에 비유하여 위 예문처럼 branch out이라고 말할 수 있습니다.
