A man in his 30s has been handed down a suspended prison term for inflicting violence on his mother with a liquor bottle for scolding him.

Ulsan District Court said Sunday that it has sentenced the 35-year-old to nine months in prison, suspended for two years, and 200 hours of community service and as well as 40 hours of alcohol treatment on charges of domestic violence and obstruction of justice.

The man was indicted for striking his mother with a soju bottle at home in Buk-gu, Ulsan around 7 p.m. on Jan. 26.

He reportedly beat her because she scolded him for buying chicken and alcohol on credit without having the ability to pay for them.

The suspect also allegedly cursed at civil servants and slapped a guard who was trying to tear down his unlicensed street stall located in a local marketplace in Ulsan around 11 a.m. on Oct. 31, 2017.

The court said, “The suspect has expressed regret during his detention which lasted over a hundred days,” to explain the severity of the punishment.
