Vietnamese man caught 6-hours after escaping immigration detention

Oct. 30, 2017 - 17:21 By Korea Herald
A Vietnamese man who escaped from an immigration detention room at Gimhae Airport in Busan was caught by airport officials about six hours after he got away.

Gimhae Airport officials said on Monday that the 32-year old Vietnamese man had escaped from detention room at the airport where he was kept for deportation. He flew into Korea on Sunday afternoon but got stopped by immigration officers. He said he was visiting Korea for business purposes but the immigration officers found the company that originally invited him had withdrawn the invitation.

The man was sent to a detention room at the airport that was being watched by two security guards. The detainee reportedly made the escape around Sunday midnight.

After roaming around the airport for some six hours, he was caught in the passenger’s waiting area, through which he could get out of the airport. He was immediately taken back to the detention room for investigation.

His escape suggests possible issues in the security of Gimhae Airport.
