North Korea fires missile over Japan, dashing hopes for talks

[1] North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan into the sea in an aggressive test Tuesday, prompting scathing criticism from Seoul and Washington just one day after the allies sought to renew hopes for a return to dialogue.

* ballistic missile: 탄도미사일
* aggresive: 공격적인 (<-> passive: 수동적인)
* prompt: 유발하다 (=touch off:유발/촉발하다)
* scathing: 통렬한, 가차없는
* allies: 동맹
* dialogue: 대화(=talks)

[2] Launched from Pyongyang’s Sunan area at around 6 a.m., the missile flew some 2,700 kilometers and reached a maximum height of 550 kilometers before falling into the northern Pacific Ocean via the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

* launch: 발사하다 (=fire)
* some: 대략 ~의 (=about ~, approximately ~)
* maximum height: 최대고도

The JCS appears to be considering the projectile to be the Hwasong-12, an intermediate-range ballistic missile successfully tested last May, though a detailed analysis is underway. Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera shared the view at a meeting with reporters in Tokyo, citing the missile’s flight distance and other features.

* appears to ~:~로 보이다
* projectile: 발사체
* detailed analysis: 세세한 분석
* underway: 진행중이다
* cite ~: ~를 인용하다

2. '살인자의 기억법' 리뷰

기사요약: 김영하 소설 원작, 설경구 주연.망상과 실제 사이에서 혼란스러워하는 노년의 살인범의 이야기.

[1] How many more stories of gruesome serial killings and smiling psychopathic murderers are left to tell in Korean cinema? “Memoir of a Murderer,” as is evident from the title, is yet another film that presents a killer as its lead. Unfortunately, it neither recounts a probing memoir nor delivers the terror of murder.

* gruesome: 섬뜩한, 소름끼치는
* serial killing: 연쇄살인
* memoir: 회고록
* recount: 얘기하다
* probe: 조사하다

It opens with an emaciated elderly man trudging along an empty railroad track. The air around him is as misty as his foggy memory -- he cannot remember where he is or what he is doing.

* emaciated: 쇠약한, 수척한
* elderly man: 노인
* trudge: 터덜터덜 걷다
* misty: 안개가 낀, 흐릿한
