최근 소형SUV가 인기를 끌고 있지만 여전히 대형SUV 중심의 미국에서 스토닉의 시장성에 대한 고민과 함께 12월 미국 출시 예정인 ‘형님’ 현대차의 신형 소형SUV 코나와의 직접적인 경쟁이 여러모로 부담이 되었던 것으로 풀이된다.

기아차는 이날 스토닉을 최초로 공개하며 사전계약에 돌입했다. 공식 출시는 다음달 13일이다.

기아차는 무엇보다 파격적인 가격을 앞세워 쌍용차 티볼리 등 경쟁모델들과 승부를 보겠다는 전략이다. 스토닉은 1.6리터 디젤엔진과 7단 더블클러치 트랜스미션을 기본으로 탑재하고 있다. 가격은 1,895만원에서 시작해 디젤SUV로서는 국내에서 가장 낮은 수준이다.

기아차는 가격경쟁력을 갖춘 디젤 모델의 판매에 따라 가솔린 모델을 출시할 예정이다.

스토닉은 디럭스 1,895만원~1,925만원, 트렌디 2,065 만원~2,095 만원, 프레스티지 2,265 만원~2,295 만원 범위 내 책정될 예정이다.

Kia has no plans to release Stonic in US

[THE INVESTOR] Kia Motors, the nation’s second largest carmaker, on June 27 said it has no plans to sell the new Stonic subcompact SUV in the all-important US market, but instead will focus on the domestic and European markets. 

“We don’t have plans to release Stonic in the US at the moment, Seo Bo-won, Kia’s domestic marketing director, told The Investor at the unveiling event of the vehicle at its Namyang Research & Development Center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. “We will first focus on the domestic market. Following the Korean debut, the car will be introduced in Europe sometime in the third quarter.”

Kia has pulled the wraps off its B-segment SUV Stonic in Korea and has started receiving preorders. The car will be available officially from July 13. 

Stonic, powered by 1.6-liter diesel engine paired to a seven-speed double-clutch transmission, boasts an affordable price tag that ranges from 19 million won (US$16,709) to 23 million won. That is about 2 million won cheaper than its compact car rivals, including its own Niro SUV, Hyundai Motor’s Kona, SsangYong Motor’s Tivoli and Renault Samsung’s QM3. 

At the moment, only the diesel powertrain is available in Korea. The automaker said it hasn’t yet decided whether it will sell the gasoline-powered Stonic. “We will make a decision after observing consumer demand,” Seo said. 

As for the European market, both gasoline and diesel options will be available, according to the carmaker. 

The Stonic entry is expected to heat up the already competitive compact SUV segment in Korea, with Tivoli as the top-seller and Hyundai aiming to take over with its latest Kona compact SUV that was released earlier this month.
