Huawei to supply network equipment for Olympics

Dec. 13, 2016 - 17:15 By Shin Ji-hye
Chinese tech giant Huawei is slated to provide its network equipment for the upcoming PyeongChang Olympics, Huawei and the Olympics committee confirmed Tuesday.

Under the supply deal signed Tuesday, Huawei plans to supply wired network equipment and related services for the Olympics. The Chinese firm will also provide various network services including real-time data transmission, broadband certification and event network security monitoring based on an integrated network system.

Huawei’s enterprise business group chief Yan Lida stressed the safety of its products in response to growing doubts about security concerns.

“All companies should partially and entirely be responsible for the security of their products. The data on Huawei’s products being used globally proves the security of our products,” Yan said at a press briefing in Seoul.

“Our products underwent long-term and rigid security tests as security and credibility are the most important conditions for Olympics,” said Quan Yi, Huawei’s enterprise business group director.

When Huawei’s Korean telecom carrier partner LG Uplus first adopted Huawei’s equipment in 2013, there were growing concerns about security issues. The US government then expressed concerns that the equipment would be used to wiretap communications between Korea and the US.

SK Telecom and KT currently have no plans to adopt Huawei’s network equipment.
