A group of South Korea's ruling party members supporting President Park Geun-hye are set to launch their alliance Tuesday to cope with challenges from increasingly vocal anti-Park rivals.

A factional feud has been escalating inside the Saenuri Party over a corruption scandal involving Park, with each demanding the other leave the party.

The pro-Park members, reeling from the fallout from the scandal, began to regroup after the National Assembly overwhelmingly passed the impeachment motion against the president last Friday.

Around 50 lawmakers are estimated to have joined the group, to be co-chaired by three senior politicians -- former deputy parliamentary speaker Rep. Jeong Kab-yoon, former six-term lawmaker Rhee In-je and North Gyeongsang Gov. Kim Kwan-yong.

A alliance of anti-Park politicians, led by former party head Rep. Kim Moo-sung and former floor leader Rep. Yoo Seong-min, has demanded the resignation of the party leadership, dominated by Park allies.

On Tuesday, the ad-hoc group declared its disbandment to establish a new organization. 

Kim said he is seriously considering leaving Saenuri and starting a new party. In a news conference, Kim condemned Park loyalists saying they are the slaves, not political partners, of the president. (Yonhap)
