Korea’s major power organizations have launched an association to promote sustainable energy, it was announced Thursday.

A total of 19 organizations, including Korea Electric Association, Korea Electrical Contractors Association, formed the Sustainable Power Policy Association to contribute to the moves to curb climate change. Comprised of a top committee, a consultative body and expert committee, the newly-launched organization will run as a voluntary policy body for electricity measures.

“(The group) will seek measures to resolve problems contributing to climate change, which has become the core of our sustainable power use policies. The group will also propose optimum solutions to pending issues in various fields including new growth drives, risk management, conflict management and social integration for the power industry,” said Han Duck-soo, a former prime minister who will serve as the first chairman of the organization, during the opening ceremony held in Seoul.

With the mission to achieve a “clean earth and happiness for the next generation upon sustainable power measures,” the organization vowed to keep holding discussions on three major issues -- social integration, conflict management and risk management.

The organization pledged to focus on boosting the new energy industry, mapping out climate change-related measures and a future technology development plan, and forming a new culture of sustainable energy.

After the opening ceremony, Korea Electric Power Corp. CEO Cho Hwan-eik delivered a special speech on Kepco’s strategies on the new power industry.
