Chinese smartphones snatch market share from Samsung, Apple

[THE INVESTOR] Chinese smartphone makers saw their market share increase in the August-September period, while Samsung Electronics and Apple appear to be losing steam.

Recent data compiled by global market researcher Trendforce showed that the market share of Samsung and Apple in the third quarter dropped 2 percentage points and 2.1 percentage points, respectively, to 22.3 percent and 12.9 percent, compared to the second quarter of this year.

Samsung and Apple took the top two spots in the global smartphone market.



The world’s third-largest smartphone firm Huawei’s market share decreased slightly from 9.2 percent to 9.1 percent in the same period while Oppo was able to increase its market share by 0.5 percentage point to 6.1 percent.

LG Electronics of Korea took the fourth place with its market share reaching 5.7 percent, up 0.3 percent from the previous quarter.

Chinese firms BBK and Vivo managed to post robust growth with their market share increasing 4.7 percent to 5.2 percent, respectively.
