64% Korean firms in China hurt by THAAD: survey

Sept. 26, 2016 - 12:57 By 박윤아
[THE INVESTOR] More than half of South Korean businesses in China have been hurt after South Korea’s decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, according to a survey on Sept. 26.

In the survey, conducted by the office of lawmaker Yoo Eun-hae on the National Assembly’s Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, 64 percent -- 20 companies of the 31 surveyed-- answered that their businesses in China have suffered a blow after Seoul decided to put in place the anti-ballistic missile system.

China expressed strong opposition to the deployment, claiming it won’t be helpful in establishing regional peace and security.

The respondents cited cancellations and indefinite delays of shows, concerts and drama promotion events that were supposed to take place in China. They also named commercials, contract signings and product shipments being put on hold as examples.

Seventy-one percent of the companies said they were worried over the lingering impact on their businesses in the future, saying that the repetition of such disruptions is “very likely”.
