Over 60% of content creators say business in China hurt by THAAD

Sept. 26, 2016 - 11:40 By 임정요
South Korea's decision to deploy a US advanced missile defense system, which faced severe opposition from China, has turned out to have dealt a blow to the business of some of the country's cultural content creators, a survey showed Monday.

In the survey, conducted Sunday by the office of lawmaker Yoo Eun-hae on the National Assembly's Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, 20 companies, or 64 percent, of the 31 surveyed answered that their businesses in China have been hurt after Seoul decided to put in place the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system. China expressed strong opposition to it, claiming it won't be helpful in establishing regional peace and security.

In detail, the respondents cited cancellations and indefinite delays of shows, concerts and drama promotion events that were supposed to take place in China. They also named commercials, contract signings and product shipments being put on hold as examples.

Seventy-one percent of the companies said they were worried over the lingering impact on their businesses in the future, saying that the repetition of such disruptions is "very likely."

They called for the government to come up with measures to protect Korean content businesses from further political fallouts.

"It is never too late for the government to raise the issue with China to have a close consultation and set up concrete measures," said Rep. Yoo. (Yonhap)
