[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics unveiled new super-fast, high-capacity solid-state drives on Sept. 21 in Seoul, which the company said would help cement its lead in the global storage system market.

The new non-volatile memory express (NVMe) SSDs, dubbed the 960 PRO and 960 EVO, were unveiled at the annual Samsung SSD Global Summit 2016.

The NVMe is a communications interface that improves the speed of data processing.

 

Samsung explained the 960 PRO with 2-terabyte storage capacity is 1.4 times faster and 4 times larger in storage than the preceding 950 PRO.

The latest SSD, equipped with a vertical NAND flash memory chip, advanced controller, a 2-gigabyte DRAM, boats 3,500 megabytes per second in read speed and 2,100 MB/s in write speed, which are six times and four times faster, respectively, than the read and write speeds of an average SATA SSD.

The 960 PRO, approximately 30 time faster than a hard disk drive, allows users to transfer a high-definition 3.7GB movie file in one second and to store it in two seconds, according to the tech firm.

The 960 EVO comes in three storage options -- 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB -- and features read and write speeds of 3,200 MB/s and 1,900 MB/s, respectively.

“For more than 30 years, Samsung has continued to push the boundaries of what can be delivered for innovative consumer memory experiences,” said Kim Un-soo, a senior vice president of Samsung’s memory business.

“Our V-NAND technology for NVMe-based storage products is our most recent advancement in the NVMe era,” he added.

The new products will be available worldwide from October with retail prices for the 960 PRO and 960 EVO at US$329.99 and US$129.99, respectively.
