Kim defeated Ai Fukuhara of Japan 4-1 (11-7, 11-7, 11-5, 12-14, 11-5) in the bronze medal contest of women's table tennis singles at the Rio Games. This is the first time since 2004 that North Korea has collected a medal in women's table tennis singles. At the Athens Games, Kim Hyang-mi won the silver medal.

Kim will be the fourth North Korean to win a medal at the Rio Games. Earlier in the day, shooter Kim Song-guk took the bronze medal in the men's 50m pistol. Before Wednesday, North Korea won two silver medals in weightlifting.

Kim, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Wednesday, fell to the third place match after losing to world No. 1 Ding Ning of China 4-1 in the semifinals. Ding went on to win the gold medal after defeating her compatriot and reigning Olympic champion Li Xiaoxia in the final. (Yonhap)
