Lotte spent W10tr on M&As in six years

[THE INVESTOR] Lotte Group, the country’s fifth-largest conglomerate, was the most aggressive in acqusitions in terms of transaction value over the past six years, data showed Aug. 10.

The group signed a total of 28 acquisition deals worth 9.75 trillion won (US$8.87 billion) between 2010 and end-July, according to research firm CEO Score.

The amount accounted for 20.8 percent of 46 trillion won, the outstanding transaction value reported by the nation’s top 30 business groups during the period. 



CEO Score only tracked M&A deals in which Korean companies obtained management rights through transactions and those who unveiled the final deal value in their financial reports.

According to the data, food and entertainment conglomerate CJ Corp was the most active buyer, buying 42 companies during the six-year period.

Hyundai Motor Group, the world’s fifth-largest automotive group, has spent a total of 5.54 trillion won to acquire four companies, including an engineering unit and a construction company.

Top steel maker POSCO came in third with 10 M&As worth 4.89 trillion won, trailed by SK Group with 4.47 trillion won and Hanwha Group with 3.57 trillion won.
