Pistol shooter aims for history

Aug. 10, 2016 - 10:08 By KH디지털2

South Korean pistol shooter Jin Jong-oh will aim for a piece of history at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics on Wednesday.

He's the two-time defending gold medalist in the 50m pistol event, and if he takes the title at the Olympic Shooting Centre, Jin will become the first shooter, male or female, to win a single event at three straight Olympics.

Jin won silver in the 50m pistol in 2004, already making him the most decorated shooter in that event.

He had a disappointing start to the Rio Olympics, finishing fifth in the 10m air pistol on Saturday in his title defense.

In Brasilia, the Brazilian capital, the men's football team will face Mexico in the the final Group C contest at Mane Garrincha Stadium with a chance to reach the quarterfinals. A draw will suffice, but South Korea coach Shin Tae-yong has said he doesn't want his players to settle for a tie and they should go for a victory.

In men's judo, Gwak Dong-han, world No. 1 in 90kg, will try to make his Olympic debut a memorable one with a gold.

Two Olympic fencing medalists will be the piste Wednesday. Ku Bon-gil helped the men's sabre team to a gold in London, and he'll chase an individual title in Rio.

Foil fencer Nam Hyun-hee, who won an individual silver and a team bronze in the past two Olympics, will be after her first gold in her fourth and likely her last Olympics at age 34. (Yonhap)
