South Korean weightlifter Yoon Jin-hee won bronze in the women's 53kg at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics on Sunday.

Yoon lifted 88kg in snatch and 111kg in clean and jerk for a total of 199kg, finishing 1kg behind Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippines for the bronze.

Hsu Shu-Ching of Chinese Taipei won the gold with 212kg total.

This was Yoon's second career Olympic medal, after silver in 53kg at the 2008 Beijing Games.

She came out of retirement in 2014 to make the national team for Rio.

Her husband, Won Jeong-sik, will be competing in the men's 69kg later in the Olympics.

Yoon at first looked to be on her way to fourth place, just 1kg shy of a medal. Li Yajun of China, who set an Olympic record with 101kg in snatch, seemed headed for an easy victory, as she appeared to lift 126kg in her second attempt.

That attempt, however, was ruled invalid. Li then failed to lift 126kg in her last chance, as Yoon moved up to third place.

In Beijing, Yoon won silver with 94kg in snatch and 119kg in clean and jerk for 213kg total.

This was South Korea's first weightlifting medal in Rio, after getting shut out in London. (Yonhap)
