Sabre fencer looking to defend gold

Aug. 8, 2016 - 09:17 By KH디지털2
Of the 13 gold medals that South Korea grabbed at the 2012 London Olympics, the title by Kim Ji-yeon in women's individual sabre fencing just might have been the most surprising.

Kim came out of nowhere to stun the reigning world champion, Sofiya Velikaya of Russia, in the final. And in Rio on Monday, Kim will be out to prove her victory wasn't a fluke.

In women's archery, Ki Bo-bae begins her own quest for a title defense in the individual event. No female archer has won back-to-back Olympic individual gold medals.

In men's judo, An Chang-rim will try to validate his No. 1 ranking in the -73kg class. He will likely have to get past Shohei Ono of Japan. An has never defeated Ono in their four meetings so far.

The women's volleyball team, coming off a victory over Japan in the first group match, will take on Russia. (Yonhap)
