[THE INVESTOR] South Korea's state-run telecommunications research institute said July 18 that it will provide an automated translation application for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

Co-developed by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and local software firm Hancom Interfree, Genie Talk translates Korean into English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Arabic.

ETRI

The ETRI first launched the free translation app for Korean-English in 2012 and has since added more languages.

Since its launch, more than 2.2 million users have downloaded the mobile app which is compatible both with Apple’s iPhones and Samsung Electronics’ Android-based mobile devices. The ETRI said Genie Talk can recognize 270,000 Korean words and 65,000 English words.
