Korea tops average Internet speed worldwide: report

[THE INVESTOR] Korea has the highest average Internet connection speed in the world, according to a report by Akamai Technologies, a content delivery network provider headquartered in the US.

The organization’s quarterly report, “State of the Internet,” showed that in the first quarter of the year Korea has four times faster average Internet speed at 29 Mbps, an 8.6 percent increase over the previous quarter. It was followed by Norway, Sweden, Hong Kong and Switzerland. The world average was 6.3 Mbps.

For the global average peak connection speeds, Singapore came in first with the highest average peak connection, at 146.9 Mbps. 



In terms of mobile connection speeds, Korea came in eighth while the UK topped the rank with 27.9 Mbps. Algeria had the lowest mobile connection speed at 2.2 Mbps.

Akamai annually collects data from its globally distributed Intelligent Platform, which gathers massive amounts of data on many metrics such as Internet connection speeds, network connectivity and IPv6 adoption progress.
