Korean display-makers Samsung Display and LG Display will flex their technological muscles at SID’s Display Week 2016, an annual trade show to be held from Tuesday to Thursday, in San Francisco.
The display business unit of Samsung Group will showcase a host of futuristic products including organic light-emitting diode displays that can be rolled or folded, OLED displays for virtual reality gadgets and vehicles, and hologram technology.

First mass-produced in 2007, Samsung’s OLED, often dubbed AMOLED, was first fitted on Japanese tech firm Kyocera’s mobile phone Media Skin. Since then it has gained traction, being adopted for Samsung Electronics’ best-selling smartphone Galaxy lineup.
Some of the products to be unveiled at the event organized by the Society for Information Display, an organization to promote the display industry, will serve as an indicator for what kind of technology Samsung will choose for the next Galaxy smartphones and other digital devices down the road.
During the trade show, the tech giant will exhibit a 5.7-inch AMOLED display that show off a QHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 -- the industry’s highest level -- and a 0.3-millimeter depth.
The firm’s rollable AMOLED display, weighing a mere 5 grams, boasts 0.3 millimeters in depth and 10 radius of curvature, which means the display can be rolled into a circle with a 10 millimeter radius.
The rollable display is regarded as a future display technology as it can be employed for TVs and tablet PCs that can be rolled in and out.

The company will also showcase 13.3-inch and 14-inch AMOLED display panels for laptops equipped with touch sensors, which will help reduce the thickness and weight of a laptop.
A transparent display and a reflective display, which works like a mirror, the hologram technology that can project 3-D images in the air will appeal to visitors at the trade fair, according to Samsung.
“The hologram tech is expected to be utilized for various purposes including 3-D games or digital pop-up books,” said Seo Philip, a public relations representative from Samsung Display.
LG Display, the world’s leading manufacturer of OLED display for TV, will try to receive limelight at the event with its large-scale OLED displays for digital devices, home appliances, as well as cars.
The Seoul-based display-maker will showcase a 75-inch OLED display, a 55-inch double-sided signage, and a curved 65-inch OLED display during SID’s Display Week 2016.
Mobile displays equipped with touch sensors and the display tech that allows users to control smartphones with gloves on will be some of the exhibits of LGD.
“LGD will continue to lead the global display sector by rolling out differentiated products in the market and achieving technology innovation,” Han Sang-beom, chief executive of the display firm, said in a press release.
Kang In-byung, chief technology officer of LGD, will be named as a fellow member of the SID for his dedication to commercializing large-scale OLED displays and OLED TVs, and Oh Chang-ho, a senior vice president of LGD, is slated to receive an award for his research and development in display.
