Overnight, the Dow Jones industrial average slipped 1.21 percent, weighed down by lackluster earnings results for some high-profile companies including department store chain Macy’s.

Samsung Electronics remained bearish, while auto issues such as Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors both traded in negative territory. Chemical companies started lower as investors apparently locked in profits from recent rallies.
