The second season of the South Korean reality TV show "New Journey to the West" has raked in over 100 million views with just the first four episodes shown in China, its producer said Wednesday.
As of Monday at 9 a.m., tvN's new web-based comedy series "New Journey to the West 2" drew a total of 100.2 million views on Chinese video sharing website Tencent Video.
In China, the reality adventure show featuring three South Korean comedy icons and a lone actor on a journey to Chinese provinces premiered on April 19. The latest episode was provided on Tuesday.
This is more than double the views for the show's first season, the cable TV network said.
At home, "New Journey to the West 2" drew in 23.4 million views during the same period.
"The show owes much of its popularity in China to its structural familiarity to the Chinese classic 'Journey to the West,'" tvN said in a press release. Another winning factor appears to be the production crew's emphasis on the details of local lives to amuse Chinese viewers, it added.
"This case of success can provide a hint as to how to advance into overseas markets for Korea's online entertainment shows," it said.
The show airs on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. on tving, Naver TVCast, Daum tvPot, KakaoTV and GOMTV. The same episode is then televised on tvN on the following Friday at 9:45 p.m. after a second round of editing. (Yonhap)
