Koreans’ meat consumption has surged nearly fivefold in the last 30 years, but still falls behind the average intake of other rich nations, a report by Food Ministry showed Friday.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Koreans had 51.3 kilograms of meat on average in 2014, less than 63.5 kilograms consumed by the member countries of the Organization for the Economic Cooperation and Development.
The U.S. topped the list with 89.7 kilograms per capita, followed by Argentina and Israel, with 85.4 and 84.2 kilograms, respectively.
Bangladesh had the least meat consumption with 2.1 kilograms, along with India and Ethiopia with 2.6 kilograms and 2.8 kilograms, respectively.
Pork was the most favored meat among Koreans.
Koreans had an average of 24.3 kilograms of pork in 2014, along with 15.4 kilograms of chicken and 11.6 kilograms of beef.
