Samsung showcases creative products at SXSW

Tech behemoth vows to grow in-house start-ups

Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics said Monday it would display products developed by the firm’s in-house start-ups during the South by Southwest, or SXSW, Conferences and Festivals, an annual cultural and technology event currently being held in Austin, Texas.

The C-Lab is a start-up program the Korean tech giant has run since 2013 for its employees to materialize their ideas into products and services.

Three products -- virtual reality motion headset Entrim 4D, mobile app Hum On!, which allows users to compose a song merely by humming, and social network service WAFFLE, which lets users write stories together.

The Entrim 4D headset, which works with Samsung’s Gear VR, allows users to feel movements in the virtual reality world by sending electrical signals to their vestibule organs. The product is in line with Samsung’s efforts to overcome discrepancies between VR content full of action and a rather “action-less” reality.

Samsung showcased a set of technologies developed by its in-house start-ups during the Consumer Electronics Show, held in Las Vegas in January.

Among more than 100 projects at the C-Lab, 70 completed a prototype development stage with some of them in the pipeline for commercialization.

“Samsung will try to boost communication with customers by showcasing achievements made via the C-Lab and make efforts to support projects for both hardware and software,” said Lee Jai-il, a vice president and the head of Samsung Creative Development Center.
