South Korean actor Jung Woo-sung plans to meet Syrian refugees in Lebanon as part of efforts to enhance public awareness of the humanitarian crisis, a U.N. agency said Wednesday.
Jung has worked as a "goodwill ambassador" for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 2014.
He will meet with refugee families in "informal settlements" in Lebanon in March, it said.
It would be his third visit to the UNHCR's refugee operation following visits to Nepal and South Sudan in 2014 and 2015.
"My heart feels heavy as I am about to meet the Syrian refugees whom I have, until now, known only through UNHCR and the media," he was quoted as saying. "I will listen to their most urgent needs, and try my best to raise awareness and increase donations from the Korean public."
He added, "Mostly, I hope with all my heart that peace is restored and the war ends in Syria so that refugees can return home safely."
UNHCR is stepping up efforts to better inform the world about the Syria crisis. (Yonhap)
