Feb. 22, 2016 - 15:10 By KH디지털2

American blockbuster "Deadpool" swept the South Korean box office over the weekend, attracting more than 1 million moviegoers.

According to the Korean Film Council, 1.06 million people visited local movie theaters to watch the superhero film between Feb. 19-21.

The movie, based on American comic books published by Marvel Comics, has snagged 14.3 billion won since it was released in the country on Feb. 17.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, it features the journey of a foul-mouthed former Special Forces agent who gains special powers and physical prowess after he was disfigured and transformed into Deadpool.

The movie, widely popular worldwide, is set to outperform "Passion of the Christ," becoming the top grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Closely following "Deadpool" at the local box office was "A Violent Prosecutor," a South Korean movie about a short-tempered, tough prosecutor, played by Hwang Jung-min, who is wrongly accused of manslaughter and put behind bars. In prison, he meets a young crook, played by heartthrob Kang Dong-won, and plots to prove his innocence and clear his name.

Over the weekend, the film sold 451,883 tickets, achieving an accumulated total of more than 9 million viewers in just 19 days after its opening. The outstanding performance is similar to that of "Veteran," the third-most viewed South Korean film of all time.

The crime comedy drew huge interest among South Korean movie fans who are interested in seeing the chemistry between the two popular actors. Hwang's two recent movies "Ode to My Father" and "Veteran" passed the 10-million milestone in 2015. (Yonhap)
