Information technology solutions developer Samsung SDS has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chuncheon City Government to build a data center in the city, some 100 kilometers east of Seoul, officials said Wednesday.
The data center will focus on providing services for Samsung Group’s financial business affiliates. Construction of the facility will be completed in the second half of 2019, said Samsung SDS.

The new data center will be a Tier 3 data center that incorporates environmentally-friendly and highly efficient technologies, such as dual-powered IT systems.
“Chuncheon City is an optimal place to build a data center as the annual average temperature is lower by around 1 to 2 degrees Celsius than that of Seoul and its adjacent cities. Earthquakes and yellow dust blowing from China are relatively rare around that region,” said a Samsung SDS official.
The Samsung Group affiliate currently runs four data centers across the nation, including those in Sangam in Seoul, and Gwacheon in Gyeonggi Province.
