The number of employees at South Korea’s top 30 major business groups rose 17.2 percent last year over 2010, according to industry data Wednesday.

This exceeded the average rise of 13 percent for the corporate sector.
CEO Score, a local corporate researcher, said the number of people employed by the country’s 30 largest business groups -- including Samsung, Hyundai and LG -- stood at 986,231 as of end-September last year.
The growth rate over the past five years is higher than the 13.3 percent gain for companies overall.
The government has been enlisting support from the local corporate sector to hire more workers as one of the means for boosting the sluggish economy.
Among the top groups, Shinsegae Group, CJ Corp. and Hanwha Group increased their payrolls, while Kumho Asiana Group and Dongbu made cuts.
