Korea secure quarterfinals berth in Olympic football qualifying tournament

Jan. 17, 2016 - 17:37 By KH디지털2

South Korea clinched a quarterfinals berth at the ongoing Olympic football qualifying tournament in Qatar with one group match remaining, thanks to some help from other countries.

South Korea did their part by defeating Yemen 5-0 Saturday in Doha for their second straight victory in Group C at the Asian Football Confederation U-23 Championship. It doubles as the Asian qualifying tournament for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro and only the top three out of 16 nations will advance to the Olympics.

Hours after South Korea's win, Iraq beat Uzbekistan 3-2 for their second straight win in Group C. These results meant South Korea and Iraq have secured the top two spots in the group, while Uzbekistan and Yemen have been eliminated with two losses apiece.

South Korea and Iraq will clash at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grand Hamad Stadium in Doha (1:30 a.m. Wednesday in Korean time) with the top spot in Group C at stake.

South Korea are currently leading Iraq thanks to superior goal difference, plus-6 to plus-3, and can win the group with at least a draw.

In the quarterfinals, the Group C winner will face Group D's runner-up at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, local time, or 10:30 p.m. Saturday in Seoul. The Group C runner-up will play the Group D winner at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Doha, or 1:30 a.m. next Sunday, Korean time.

All matches will take place in Doha. South Korea are trying to qualify for their eighth consecutive Olympics. (Yonhap)
