Seoul stocks open lower on China‘s retreat

South Korean share prices opened lower Thursday to track the previous day’s losses in China’s stock markets.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index lost 18.52 points, or 0.97 percent, to 1,897.76 in the first 15 minutes of trading.

The index was trading 1.38 percent lower at 1889.93 points as of 9:55 a.m.

The Shanghai Composite, a key Chinese stock index, lost more than 2 percent on Wednesday to close at 2949.60.

Shares lost ground across the board, with Samsung Electronics falling 0.96 percent and chipmaker SK hynix plunging 1.96 percent. LG Display also moved down 0.9 percent.

Steelmakers traded in mostly negative territory in the morning session. POSCO shed 1.22 percent, while Korea Zinc and Hyundai Steel fell 0.78 percent and 1.48 percent, respectively.
