Kia Motors unveils all-new K7 sedan

Jan. 11, 2016 - 11:45 By KH디지털2

Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's second-ranked carmaker, disclosed its full change version of the K7 large-size sedan on Monday equipped with its own eight-speed transmission that enhances overall fuel efficiency and driving performance.

The all-new K7, whose official sales will start in late January, was disclosed to the media early in the day during a preview event at its Namyang R&D Center, southwest of Seoul.

Equipped with its own front-wheel eight-speed transmission for the first time, the latest version of the K7 boasts "much better fuel efficiency and a "smooth" and "dynamic" driving experience compared with the previous model that hit the market seven years ago.

Kia Motors developed the eight-speed auto transmission for the first time in the world, and this was also the first time that this transmission was applied to its vehicles. Kia Motors plans to use the transmission in other premium sedans and SUVs going forward.

The K7 comes in four different types of power trains, including the 2.4-liter and 3.3-liter gasoline and 2.2-liter diesel models.

It also plans to launch the hybrid model during the second half.

In particular, the 3.3-liter gasoline model will be equipped with an enhanced version of the Lambda II engine, which, combined with the eight-speed transmission, produces up to 290 horsepower and a torque of 35 kg-meters. It runs 10 kmpl, a similar level of fuel efficiency of the 3.0-liter model under the previous lineup.

The new K7 is 4,970 millimeters long and 1,870 mm wide, stands at 1,470 mm. Its wheel base is 2,855 mm, which is 10 mm longer than the previous model, providing roomy inside space for passengers.

Its "concave" radiator grille and the Z-shaped head lamps make a luxurious impression, with its side emphasized for a sporty and speedy image, the company explained.

As seen in other recently unveiled models, Kia Motors continued to focus on using more advanced high strength steel aimed at improving the strength of the vehicle without increasing its weight.

Along with safety-oriented designs to enhance its structural integrity, the K7 provides diverse safety features, such as Smart Blind Spot Detection, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Advanced Smart Cruise Control that will help drivers avoid accidents.

The price of the K7 ranges from 30.80 million won to 39.40 million won depending on power trains and options. Kia Motors said that it will start receiving preorders for the latest model Tuesday. (Yonhap)
