Dec. 10, 2015 - 09:46 By KH디지털2
Global sales of active mode organic light-emitting diode display panels for smartphones and other mobile devices soared to a record high in the third quarter, industry data showed Thursday.

Worldwide shipments of mobile displays stood at 79 million units in the third quarter, more than doubling from a year earlier and up 35 percent from three months earlier, according to the data by market tracker IHS.

The value of such mobile displays sold also reached a record high of $3.29 billion, nearly doubling over the cited period, the data showed.

AMOLED displays accounted for about 18 percent of the third quarter's total shipments.

AMOLED displays are mostly used in mobile phones and small-screen tablet computers as they consume less power and offer wider viewing angles and faster response times than liquid-crystal display panels.

Demand for such panels has risen as global smartphone makers, such as Samsung Electronics Co., adopt them on their high-end devices.

The data showed that Samsung Display Co., an affiliate of Samsung Electronics Co., dominated the global small and midsized AMOLED panel market with a 95.8 percent market share.

The South Korean panel maker also led the overall smartphone display panel market with a 38.5 percent presence, followed by Japan Display Co. with a 17 percent share and LG Display Co. of South Korea with 13.8 percent, the data showed. (Yonhap)
