Embattled German automaker Volkswagen's sales in South Korea more than quadrupled in November on the back of large-scale incentives and promotions amid the deepening emissions scandal, industry data showed Friday.

According to data compiled by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association, Volkswagen sold a record 4,517 cars last month in South Korea, compared with October's 947 units.

The November sales for Volkswagen were much higher than the 32 percent on-month rise in total foreign car registrations, which stood at 22,991 units.

The sharper-than-expected rise was attributed to Volkswagen's aggressive marketing and promotion aimed at curbing its slump in sales here.

Since the outbreak of the emissions scandal, demand has plunged, as customers seem to be disenchanted by the revelation that the company used stealth software to fabricate the results of emissions tests for some of its popular models, mostly diesel vehicles.

BMW came second with 4,217 units sold last month, followed by Audi with 3,796 and Mercedes-Benz with 3,441.

Meanwhile, cumulative sales of foreign brands during the January-November period stood at 219,534 units, up 22.5 percent from a year earlier, according to the data. (Yonhap)
