Daesung wins 2 U.K. environmental awards

Daesung Group announced Tuesday that it has won two International Green Apple Awards for its eco-friendly energy plants.

The Green Apple Awards, which recognize green companies, organizations and people, are environmental awards officially recognized by the EU Commission and the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce.

Daesung Group won the Asian Green Champion for SolaWin and the Gold Award for a landfill gas-to-energy system in Bancheon-ri, Daegu. The awards were presented at a ceremony on Nov. 16 at the British Parliament in London.

The SolaWin project, launched in 2003, is a sustainable energy system that provides water and electricity through wind and solar power. The product is designed as an energy solution for developing countries and has also been recognized as a food, energy and water, or FEW-nexus, solution for developing countries.

The Bangcheon-ri LFG energy project has been considered one of the most successful biomass businesses in Korea since its completion in 2006. The project processes waste into methane, which is can then be used as fuel for Daegu. It is also registered as a clean development mechanism with the United Nations.

“It is a pleasure that our know-how and commitment to pursuing public interest has been recognized internationally,” said Daesung Group chairman and CEO Kim Young-hoon. “With sincerity and persistence, we will continue to play a leading role in the development of renewable energy,” he said.

Kim has been serving as the cochair of the World Energy Council, and will become the sole chair of the organization in 2016.
