South Korea's tech behemoth Samsung Electronics Co. topped major emerging smartphone markets in shipments, data showed Wednesday, in line with its latest efforts to tap deeper into Southeast Asia.

According to the data compiled by Strategy Analytics, the South Korean handset maker ranked No. 1 in 14 of what it calls the "next fifteen" countries over the July-September period.

Samsung Electronics far outpaced other rivals in Egypt and Turkey, where it accounted for 53.6 percent and 45.2 percent of the markets, respectively, in the third quarter.

The firm also scooped up 44.2 percent in Romania and 43.3 percent in the Netherlands, the researcher added.

Among the 15 countries surveyed, Indonesia stood as the top smartphone market with 10 million unit sales in the third quarter.

Samsung took up 27.5 percent, trailed by Smartfren with 13.7 percent.

Strategy Analytics added the Southeast Asian smartphone market expanded 10 percent on-quarter in the July-September period, led mostly by Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, casting a brighter outlook over Samsung's future sales. (Yonhap)
