Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Choi Kyung-hwan on Thursday expressed his intention to run for the April 13 general elections as a ruling Saenuri Party contender.
During the National Assembly’s interpellation session on economic policymaking, the legislator-turned-minister said he would decide whether to declare his candidacy after considering the coming situation.

His remarks came after an opposition party lawmaker asked him of his intention for the 2016 parliamentary elections. Choi joked that “apart from me, I think there are many other figures who can lead the economy well.”
He added that there was no communication with President Park Geun-hye about his possible resignation.
The 60-year-old three-term lawmaker has been serving as a minister since July 2014. He was previously the floor leader of the Saenuri Party.
