Samsung Electronics to go all out to lead digital storage market

Samsung Electronics on Monday rolled out new solid-state drive storage devices for consumers and enterprises with an aim to beef up the firm’s SSD lineup and solidify its lead in the storage market.

Holding the annual Samsung SSD Global Summit under the theme of “Marching into The Next Era” on the day in Seoul, the tech giant showcased five new SSD options, including a 2 1/2-inch SSD for consumers, dubbed the 850 EVO, which is based on technology that stacks up 48 layers of cells -- which Samsung calls the third generation vertical NAND technology -- and an enterprise SSD, named the 950 PRO.

With the latest storage systems, the number of Samsung SSD options now total 10 with their storage capacities ranging from 120 gigabytes to 6.4 terabytes.

“Samsung, which provides the best solutions for customers with third-gen vertical NAND SSD with excellent performance and durability and high energy efficiency will try to accelerate the widespread use of terabyte-class SSDs by producing new products,” said Kim Eon-soo, the head of Samsung’s memory business marketing team.

The rollout of the new SSD models came after the tech firm first introduced the 850 EVO lineup -- based on the 24-layer vertical NAND technology -- last December.

Since Samsung introduced its first SSDs for consumers in 2013, it has topped the SSD market for consumers and is trying to increase its presence in the business-to-business segment.
