The amount of overdue wages for foreigners working in South Korea has increased steadily over the last three years, a report showed Friday.
Employers paid 9,378 foreign-born workers at total of 24.1 billion won ($20.3 million) late in 2012, with that number going up to 9,625 workers and 28.1 billion won in 2013 and 12,021 workers and 33.9 billion won in 2014, according to the report.
Rep. Jasmine B. Lee of the ruling Saneuri Party released the report based on data the Ministry of Labor submitted to the National Assembly for an annual audit.
Noticeably, 6,789 workers from abroad were not properly paid a total of 20.4 billion won between January and June of this year, according to the report.
"The Ministry of Labor should actively educate employers who do not pay wages on time," said Rep. Lee, adding that foreign workers should also notify the government of their situation. (Yonhap)
