S. Korean FIFA presidential hopeful meets potential rival

July 27, 2015 - 10:13 By KH디지털2

South Korean FIFA presidential hopeful Chung Mong-joon said Monday he has met with a potential rival during his trip to the United States.

Chung, former FIFA vice president, said he held talks with Michel Platini, head of the Union of European Football Associations, in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Chung declared his intention to run for the top football job last week and plans to formally announce his candidacy next month.

He is visiting the U.S. to meet football officials from the Americas during the Gold Cup, the main competition for the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football.

Chung said he proposed a friendly competition with Platini, who has yet to decide whether to join the race.

The former French star has apparently won support from Europe, Asia, South America and CONCACAF, but UEFA also says he is content with his current position.

Chung is hoping to reform the organization marred by corruption allegations and has been critical of outgoing President Sepp Blatter, blaming him for the current state of FIFA. (Yonhap)
