China's Xi says to work with U.S. on implementing Iran nuclear

July 21, 2015 - 16:09 By KH디지털2

Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Barack Obama that Beijing will work with Washington to ensure the implementation of the historic deal in reining in Iran's nuclear program, China's foreign ministry said Tuesday.

Xi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Obama earlier in the day, the Chinese ministry said in a statement. Last week, the United States, five world powers and Iran reached the landmark deal that will curb Iran's nuclear capabilities in return for lifting sanctions.

The U.N. Security Council approved the nuclear deal with Iran earlier this week, paving the way to lift sanctions against Tehran.

"The Chinese side will continue to maintain constructive cooperation with all parties, including the United States, to ensure the implementation of the comprehensive agreement and the decision by the U.N. Security Council," the statement quoted Xi as telling Obama.

Xi, who is scheduled to visit the U.S. in September, said the U.S. and China could continue cooperation in the fields of climate change, economic development, public health and other global challenges.

As China has bolstered its military, along with its fast-growing economic clout, Washington and Beijing have grappled over a range of issues, including Beijing's increasingly assertive actions in the South China Sea, cyber espionage, human rights and trade disputes.

However, the two nations have set a positive tone in resolving some security issues, including North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Hours before the telephone conversation between Obama and Xi, North Korea's foreign ministry said it was not interested in Iran-style nuclear talks, adding it has already become a nuclear weapons state. (Yonhap)
