[Universiade] S. Korea grabs three shooting titles

South Korea picked up three gold medals in shooting Monday at the Summer Universiade, taking a major step toward meeting its goal after just two days of competition.

The host swept up both team and individual titles in the women's 25-meter pistol shooting at Naju Jeollanamdo Shooting Range in Naju, South Jeolla Province, southwest of the main host city of Gwangju. Kim Ji-hye, Cho Mun-hyeon and Han Ji-young scored 1,738 points for the team gold in the morning, and then Kim claimed the individual title in the afternoon to become the first double gold medalist for South Korea.

In the individual final, Kim defeated Zhou Qing Yuan of China 7-5.

Later in the day, the men's trio of Park Dae-hun, Jang Ha-lim and Lee Tae-hwan won the team gold medal in the 50m pistol event.

They shot a combined 1,636 points for the gold medal. Russia finished with silver with 1,620 points, while Mongolia won the bronze with 1,616 points.

The team final also doubled as the individual qualification for the medal round, set to begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday. All three South Koreans were among the top eight to qualify for the medal stage, with Park leading all shooters with 559 points. Jang and Lee each had 548 points to join Park. (Yonhap)
