Korean chicken hits U.S. sports stadiums

April 27, 2015 - 20:10 By Korea Herald
Genesis BBQ Group, South Korea’s leading fried chicken franchise, will launch kiosks at 92 sports stadiums in the United States, the chairman said Monday.

The Korean chain signed a memorandum of understanding with Levy Restaurants, which provides vending and food services to major entertainment and sports venues, to set up its kiosks inside the National Football League, Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association stadiums.

“BBQ will make a foray into the total restaurant business which combines premium sports business and entertainment with the food sector through the MOU with Levy Restaurants,” Yoon Hong-geun, chairman of Genesis BBQ, said at a press conference in Seoul.

The annual sales from the kiosks at the 92 stadiums are expected to hit 2.4 trillion won ($2.2 billion), equivalent to revenues from 3,000 road shops, according to the company.

The stadiums include the Georgia Dome, the home stadium for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

By 2020, the Korean franchise plans to set up 50,000 stores and kiosks worldwide including 10,000 each in the U.S. and China. The rest will be opened in Asian countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, the chairman said.

Currently, Genesis BBQ operates over 500 stores in 30 countries.
