April 27, 2015 - 11:48 By KH디지털2

President Park Geun-hye offered condolences Monday to the thousands of Nepalese people killed in a massive earthquake over the weekend.

Park expressed her sympathy in a letter to Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav earlier in the day, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said.

"Our citizens and I feel very sorrowful and heartbroken for the deaths of many people in the large earthquake near Kathmandu," Park said in the letter. "I extend my deep condolences and consolation to the president and Nepalese citizens, especially to the victims and their bereaved families who are grief-stricken after the disaster."

Park expressed her hope for a speedy recovery.

Thousands of people were killed by the 7.8-magnitude quake while aftershocks continued to hit the Himalayan country for the second day.

South Korea has pledged $1 million in initial humanitarian aid amid a flurry of international assistance flowing into the country.

The condolence message came only hours after Park returned home from her 12-day visit to four South American nations. (Yonhap)
