[Graphic News] Car registration in Korea hits record high

April 22, 2015 - 19:06 By Korea Herald
The nation’s average daily traffic volume increased 1.6 percent compared to last year, with the number of registered cars hitting a record high, data showed Wednesday.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, an average of 13,378 cars were on Korea’s streets each day last year. The number of registered cars passed the 20 million mark last year to reach 20.1 million units.

Traffic lightened in 2008 and 2012, when the price of oil was high.

Despite the drop in oil prices, the growth of traffic volume slowed from 2.8 percent in 2013 to 1.6 percent in 2014.

The data also showed that there was not a huge difference in the amount of traffic from Monday to Thursday, but increased on Friday and Saturday.

The day with the heaviest traffic was Saturday and the lightest was Sunday.
